The Quantum Utility Goes Live: SQS Nodes Now Operational in Albuquerque, New Mexico
Live in Albuquerque: quantum key distribution between SQS nodes and a quantum optical clock keeping GPS-independent time, the foundation of dual-layer quantum-safe encryption for the infrastructure that runs banking, critical infrastructure, and defense. Backward compatible by design: the systems stay; the cryptography upgrades.

Secured Quantum Services (SQS), the quantum utility, today announced that its first deployed nodes are live and operational in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The deployment marks the arrival of a new delivery model for quantum technology: capabilities consumed as a service, the way organizations consume power or bandwidth. Two capabilities are live today, quantum key distribution and quantum-assured timing, and they are the foundation of the platform's quantum-safe security service now being built on top of them.
In the deployment, Toshiba quantum key distribution systems exchange encryption keys node to node between SQS systems, using the laws of physics to protect the key exchange. Those quantum-delivered keys are the first link in a deliberate lineage: paired with NIST post-quantum algorithms in a defense-in-depth design, they become the basis of quantum-safe messaging between nodes, the next milestone now in integration. Alongside them, a quantum optical clock keeps time in the racks, distributing synchronization that does not depend on GPS. All of it operates beside the conventional classical systems in the same deployment, which is the point: the platform is built to live inside the infrastructure organizations already run, not replace it. SQS is inviting evaluators and partners to watch that network being built, milestone by milestone.
"Most of the industry hands you a product and leaves the quantum transition to you. We're building the utility instead," said Zain Premji, co-founder and Chief Strategy Officer of SQS. "The keys moving between our nodes are protected by physics, not mathematics alone, and they're moving in Albuquerque today. There's extraordinary quantum science happening right now, and what we've built is the first tangible step an organization can take with it."

Why it matters beyond the lab. Adversaries are conducting "harvest now, decrypt later" collection today, storing encrypted data to break when quantum computers mature. The targets are any data that must stay sensitive for decades: classified records, financial transactions, insurance and health records, the intellectual property on a balance sheet. Boards, examiners, and security leaders across government and regulated industries are already asking for quantum-readiness plans. The question now is how to transition without breaking what runs today.
Why this deployment is different. Every quantum capability (communications, timing, sensing, eventually computing) faces the same last mile: how does it reach organizations that cannot rebuild their infrastructure to adopt it? Quantum key distribution itself is proven technology, fielded commercially by companies like Toshiba for years. What has been missing is the end-to-end solution the real economy can run on: one that critical infrastructure and defense can use, without a cryptographic rewrite that few organizations can absorb quickly, from cloud platforms to the on-premises and fixed-firmware systems behind bank settlement, manufacturing, and utilities.
The SQS Platform is that last mile: a quantum-safe solution incorporating new approaches in applied cryptography and governance, enabling customers to meet a range of post-quantum and quantum cryptographic requirements, and making mandated cryptographic transitions easier to absorb. Connecting to the platform is a practical path forward to quantum-era protection: organizations begin with a pilot on live infrastructure rather than a multi-year rebuild, and modernize on their own schedule. Backward compatible by design: the infrastructure they trust stays, and the cryptographic layer is what upgrades.

"Organizations understand the quantum threat is approaching, but many are looking for a practical path forward that doesn't require rebuilding their infrastructure," said Jun Shimoda, GM North America Quantum Business at Toshiba. "The SQS Platform demonstrates how quantum key distribution can be delivered as part of a broader quantum-safe architecture, combining physics-based security with modern cryptographic protections. We are pleased to see Toshiba technology helping make quantum security accessible through a service model designed for real-world deployment."
"Everyone in quantum can show you a lab. The hard part is the work nobody sees: integration, timing, uptime, keeping systems from different vendors running together in the field day after day," said Ray Schouten, founder and Chief Executive Officer of SQS. "Our customers don't want to become quantum experts, and they shouldn't have to. They want their data protected and their operations untouched. That's exactly what this platform is being built to deliver."
The deployment operates as a multi-vendor stack in the field and has hosted hands-on technical sessions for U.S. Government evaluators and commercial prospects since going live, with additional sessions scheduled through the fall.
"Timing is live because GPS-independent synchronization is needed now. Security is first in the build because the threat is already here," Premji added. "As quantum sensing and eventually computing mature, they deploy the same way, through the same quantum-ready infrastructure. Customers connect once, and the platform grows underneath them."
SQS thanks its hardware partners Toshiba and Celestica, whose quantum key distribution systems and high-performance network switching run in these racks.
The Albuquerque deployment is the first in a series of SQS infrastructure milestones across multiple sites, with additional announcements expected in the coming months.
About Secured Quantum Services
Secured Quantum Services (SQS) is the quantum utility: deployed infrastructure delivering quantum capabilities as a service, beginning with quantum-assured timing and quantum-safe security for government and commercial organizations. SQS designs, deploys, and operates multi-vendor quantum-secure network nodes, giving customers a practical path forward to the quantum era without replacing the systems they trust.
